Ely Dock red Shed 20241024--010
66086 takes the Soham line at Ely Dock Jn., working 4L38 10.55 East Midlands Gateway - Felixstowe North. [Pole, 2/6 sections (~2.7m)]
I'd been working in Ely and, with a cloudless day forecast, had taken my camera with me. Plan A had been to go to Manea for some more shots of the semaphores, but looking towards Ely as I'd not yet got that angle in sun. However, the shots there require the use of the pole at almost full height and it was slightly windy, so I changed my plans and came here.
I arrived in time for GBRf's 4L13 from Hams Hall, but was expecting it to stop - and it didn't (it's not booked to!), so I didn't have the pole extended in time. However, it was a normal (boring) GBRf 66, had no containers anywhere near the front, and the loco was chucking out lots of exhaust which "blew down" and would have noticeably spoiled the shot. This wasn't far behind, having set off an hour and a half late, although it made up twenty minutes between Oakham and Peterborough and reached Ely sixty-six minutes late. In addition, 4L38 is booked to wait at Ely for twenty-seven minutes but it ran through without stopping, meaning it passed Ely Dock Jn. only thirty-seven minutes behind schedule. 4L38 made a much better picture than 4L13, with a shiny red loco and containers near the front of the train.
I decided to use a standard angle lens (for me, that's my new 31mm) for this train, but standing on my ladders isn't quite enough to clear the outer of two parapets on this side of the bridge (It's fine when I use something longer). So I need to use the pole to get a little extra height. In my test shot, I extended it by one more section, which made the train more diagonal in the frame, but this is an exposed spot and the breeze and air turbulence from passing road vehicles meant the pole was wobbling a bit, so when the train appeared I only extended it by one section.
