Bob departing Littleport 20240906--025
69002 Bob Tiller CM&EE heads south from Littleport, working 6E85 08.15 Middleton Towers - Barnby Dun loaded sand for glassmaking. [Pole, 5/6 sections (~6.8m)]
I'd had this location on the list for several months, and tried it earlier in the year for the Saturday sand - but a slow-moving patch of cloud didn't clear properly in time, and all I managed in sun was an ex-GWR green class 387 EMU (coupled to a white one) but with the sun angle being slightly too frontal for the dark green livery (see this picture). In July and early August, however, the sun was not yet properly lighting the front of a 69 at 9.30am, so I'd shot this train north of the level crossing where the line makes a gentle S bend and the light angle is more favourable, waiting for early autumn to have another attempt here.
There are, of course, other angles here including standing closer to the line to make the train a more dominant part of the picture. But I decided to stand wider so I could include the whole of the bank (and a little bit of water, the River Great Ouse, which is canalised at this point). Extending the pole to nearly seven metres as well as standing on top of the bank gives a much greater view of the surroundings, and allowed the houses to be clear of the nearest OHL gantry - something I wasn't quite sure I'd managed just looking at the image on the monitor while I was setting up, and the train was too close to change position (plus the small amount of slightly gusty wind meant I didn't want to raise the pole any higher).
I've cropped this to the ratio 1:2 because there was nothing of interest in the sky, which I wanted to occupy the top third of the image and put the train (and the background houses) in the middle third.
This location has the longest stretch of lineside between Littleport and Queen Adelaide which is clear of vegetation (grass and reeds), and also has a much more interesting background than the spots on the bank accessed from the Ely end.
