Good load of red and yellow among the green at Manea 20240625--050
66715 Valour approaches Welney Road level crossing at Manea, working 4E20 13.20 Felixstowe South - Masborough. [Pole, 5/6 sections (~6.8m)]
This train was making slow progress, and there was obviously a problem! It had left the Felixstowe branch in the Ipswich area pretty much on time, and had actually passed Haughley Jn. 2 minutes early. But it was 11 late at Elmswell, 14 late at Thurston, 22 late at Bury St. Edmunds and 26 late at Chippenham Jn. A seven-minute booked pathing stop at Soham was not needed, and it passed Soham station 19 late, reaching Ely 23 late and passing me here 26 late. With another booked stop around Peterborough, it passed Werrington Jn. roughly on time, but then lost about half an hour around Gainsborough and nearly quarter of an hour more between there and Doncaster.
I'd come here for GBRf's Colas-liveried 60096 on hire to DCR, which was due to work the stone empties back from Brandon (6Z84). I'd previously been to Great Chesterford for the Barrington spoil empties (see here) and then went to Soham for Maritime blue-livered 66727 on 4L13 (but found the sun was further round than I'd expected, and the front of the 66 wasn't very well lit). I'd been watching 4E20, and as I passed Barway paused to check on maps where it was and whether I had time to set up for a shot of it... but I then noticed a train sat on Ely West Curve which at first glance I thought was the Brandon! So I hurried over here, thinking I'd probably miss the most interesting working of the day locally, only to realise it was 6M84 not 6Z84 - the Freightliner sand from Middleton Towers. But when I got here, 6M84 was only just leaving Ely West Curve, behind 4E20 - for which I had plenty of time to set up (as can be seen).
It was a change to see a well-loaded container train from Felixstowe!
