The Iron House

Designed by Gustave Eiffel and completed in 1892 from prefabricated cast iron panels imported from Belgium, the Iron House was built for the Portuguese governor of Mozambique in the capital, Maputo. Unsurprisingly, it was impossible to live in under the tropical sun. Quite why no one realised this beforehand remains a mystery.
