P-47C serial 41-6332 "Butch" flown by MAJ Loren G. "Mac" McCollom, 61st Fighter Squadron, 56th FG. Bomber escort mission to Villacoublay, France.

 

McCollom commanded the group on this mission, leading the 63rd Fighter Squadron.

 

Transferred to the 353rd Fighter Group in the late summer, he took command of that unit on 18 August 1943. During the course of his tour there, "Mac" was officially credited with one confirmed aerial victory. He was shot down 25 November and spent the remainder of hostilities as a POW (MACR 1446). Following the war, McCollom made a career of the Air Force, retiring at the rank of Major General in April 1968. He passed away 15 May 1982.
