O carvalho é uma árvore de grande porte, que pode atingir 30 a 40 metros de altura e que tem um tempo de vida para cima de 500 anos.
Os frutos são as bolotas nao os bugalhos que aqui aparecem, que ao contrário do que as pessoas pensam não sao frutos, mas "uma excrescência de forma arredondada" que se forma na sequência do depósito nos ramos, de ovos de vespa. A vespa desenvolve-se e alimenta-se no interior do bugalho, onde passará por todas as fases até se tornar adulto.
