The neck is long and the beak is right and strong. Usually lives in shallow freshwater and also in the seashores. It has a broad diet, especially carnivorous, which may include fish larvae and adults of amphibians and crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic insects, reptiles, small birds, rodents and occasionally some vegetable food. Can live up to 25 years. Its flight is associated with a knock of slow and heavy wings and a retraction of the neck, feature that differentiates it from the white stork.
