Volkswagen Type 181, known as Kurierwagen in West Germany, the Trekker in the U.K., the Safari in South America, and the Pescaccia in Italy. In the United States it was known as the Thing, because Pontiac had a Station Wagon called the Safari so it couldn’t be called the same.
It was designed by Ferdinand Porsche and built during the Second World War for use by both the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-S.S.
It was produced from 1968 to 1983 for civilian purposes, at VW in Wolfsburg, and then in Hannover, Mexico, and lastly in Indonesia .
