Venford Loop

by bobfitzy62

A short walk from Venford Reservoir initially aiming for Ryder's Hill/Snowdon but as the temperatures reached the very high 20's we aborted and headed for the shelter of Venford Brook. The bracken was in abundance on Holne Moor but for the most part we were able to find paths through it.
The path to the West of the reservoir was very steep down to the brook and we then crossed the low waters and found a wide easy path on the other side.
As the sound of water invreased we took a narrow path down to the East bank and found a small waterfall/pool which seemed to have 2 outlets but wasn't the one that I'd seen pictures of (initially prompted to look for this c/o Paul Buck/Moorland walker's blog). We stopped and took our boots off to cool our feet down before venturing further down. At the confluence of the brook with the River dart was the falls that I had seen online, but not looking nearly as impressive due to low water levels and some fallen trees/stones that seemed to be impeding it's channels.
Below, in the River Dart were several people enjoying some wild swimming.
Then we climbed up the paths to reach North/Bench Tors - my first bags of the day. There were numerous outcrops although North and Bench appear to be interlinked as names. I found several references to Eagle Rock being on the other side - another name for Luckey Tor?
There were excellent views of the Dart Valley and a real feeling of height - this was my favourite part of the walk.
Then it was a short walk back to the car and off to Scorriton for a drink - the car temp gauge was showing 29c as we arrived there.
I will have to return to visit the other tors/hills in the area on another day, possibly when the bracken has died down.
