It wasn't like him to be late getting home and he had promised to go taste testing at the wedding venue with her later that night. The knock on the door that evening startled and confused her. He had keys; why is he knocking? Did he forget them? "Drunk driver," the police officer said. "Something something ran a red light. " she thought she heard him say. She couldn't make out the rest over the sound of her screaming.
On what would have been their wedding day, she dressed up as she would have, did her hair and makeup, and went out to the park where he proposed to her. The silence was deafening. The fireflies circled around her as if trying to comfort her.. Then she heard his voice in her ear. "I will always be with you. Forever."
