Dominion News RIP

Dominion News, founded in 1924, had surprisingly survived the internet which sharply reduced its "girlie" magazine business and sales of out-of-town newspapers, but COVID, with its reductions downtown people traffic, administered the coup de grace to the business, which is to close on February 24. This colourful business once offered peep shows in addition to porn and softcore magazines.

More importantly, it was also into serious news, sports, fashion, architecture and entertainment magazines with the widest selection of general magazines available locally. It also offered a downtown location where one could buy daily racing forms. I often found it convenient to buy racing forms for the local track there when I worked downtown, and it once was my/THE source for Triple Crown racing forms before the internet killed that source of income.

The company was supportive of local magazines, displaying and distributing them even when the revenue streams would be insignificant.

This photograph of the neon in June 2020 was taken with a long lens from the other side of the street, a much better angle than the same-side shot that I took and posted in 2017. This photograph includes some of the storefront cropped out of my earlier posts to isolate the neon. In the 2017 picture, the red letters on the bottom of the neon still lit up.

It is sad to lose yet another of our historic neons. As a big fan of neon, I find it bittersweet to have historical records of so many now departed signs.
