Lock and load

This ought to be a headline: "Donald Trump Takes Away NRA Members’ Guns." The Orange Twitler spoke at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting in Atlanta, GA almost two weeks ago, but the NRA told their members to leave their guns at home. So the Second Amendment doesn’t apply to the NRA? Trump campaigned on eliminating ALL gun-free zones, so he should practice what he preaches. If everyone having a gun makes us all safe, then what is wrong with having an auditorium full of AMMOSEXUALS all carrying semiautomatic rifles, shotguns, and pistols with or without a US (p)Resident at the podium? While they are at it, let’s make sure they serve lots of alcohol. What could possibly go wrong that hasn’t already gone wrong with this weird regime or his irresponsible supporters?

In related news, nearly every state legislature that has passed open carry laws also included a provision that exempted guns from being toted within their respective state houses. What are the lawmakers afraid of? Right now the Texas Legislature is actually considering a bill to allow the open carry of firearms without any kind of license or permit. And the same idiots in the Texas Legislature are also considering doing away with annual safety inspections of cars and trucks. “Conservative” extremists at national and state level are publically calling for the complete elimination of all environmental, consumer safety, labor protection, and financial regulations. Is there no longer any adult supervision in my nation?

You may notice that I shot this photo back in March 2013, but I had no reason to post it until now. A popular photo with a lengthy essay (in my 2013 folder) on gun ownership sparked a lively international debate on the subject. Read it. I like guns but only in appropriate places and not carried by irresponsible fools who intimidate ordinary people who I am sworn to protect.

I think that military grade small arms, magazines, and ammunition should be available for purchase by responsible adult citizens, but the weapons should be registered, and their owners and users should be licensed. The first step of the licensing process should be a thorough background check followed by mandatory training, both written and hands-on testing, and swearing the state militia oath. By swearing the state militia oath, all military grade firearms owners would be subject to military discipline and justice and could be mobilized by the governor for state duty in emergencies. Although individual state militia members should not be required conform to military appearance standards, they should be required to own and maintain at least one state-approved field uniform for both hot and cold weather and a basic set of field gear. The individual general militia members should not be required to join a local unit and train monthly, but they should be required to pass an annual Army Physical Fitness Test, pass an annual weapons safety and marksmanship qualification test for each weapon they are licensed for, and run a live-fire tactical assault course for each type of weapon. Unless they are simply transporting their weapons in a locked or sealed container, each time they appear in public under arms, they should be required to be in uniform in full kit and carrying their militia identification card and tags. That would eliminate much of the riff-raff that sometimes intimidates ordinary civilians but are unfit for serious public duty.
