Hidden staging yard
This is one of several hidden staging yards that Steve Sandifer has on his layout. As viewed from the aisle, a gently rising hill behind the town of Moline, Kansas hides this five-track staging yard. To get this shot, I stood in the rightmost corner and raised my camera high enough to peer over the view block. An overhead mirror enables the operator to guide a train in or out of the yard. The longest track is a through track for continuous operation during public open-house events, and the storage tracks contain three Santa Fe freight trains and a Thomas the Tank Engine train to delight his grandchildren and any young visitors. To see Thomas, click on the photo for a closeup.
I photographed this scene on Steve Sandifer's Howard Branch HO scale layout during the November 2015 Fall Layout Tour.
