Harbor Seal Pup @ Oregon Coast

Yesterday, we visited the Oregon Coast in the hopes of witnessing this year’s crop of Harbor Seal pups.

The folks at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, just at the north end of Newport, Oregon were quick to point out to me that they can usually count on the pups being birthed just in time for the annual Mother’s Day event.

However, the pups were largely missing from Yaquina Head this week. They were present last week, but were not showing as much presence this week.

So, we searched down the coast to the beaches south of Yachats and then came back to Yaquina Head, but still came up with very scarce pup presence. We decided to head home, but made a last minute stop a few miles away…and guess what? Three nice, newly delivered Harbor Seal pups; one sleeping, one feeding on momma’s milk, and the final one chasing momma across the rocky shelf in hopes of having a bit more of momma’s milk (momma appeared to want to be left alone at the time).
