Fox Kits Playing 100+ Yards Away @ San Juan Island, Washington
Yep, it's a couple of Fox Kits (which is Fox-speak for pups). They were playing at sunset a long, long ways away from us. We were restricted from getting closer to these Foxes by local park regulations (on San Juan Island).
Up till a few years ago, folks were allowed to get a lot closer to the Foxes, but, people being people, some peoples took advantage of the situation and spoiled close access to the Foxes for everyone else.
These days, in this particular park, we were required "to stay on the trails" and to not approach the Foxes any closer than a couple of school bus lenths.
So, at this location, this is as close as we could get to the Fox kits to document their playful behavior.
While we were taking pics of the Foxes on San Juan Island, we heard many stories from other photographers and locals (who are not too keen on the visiting photographers). These days, as Spring rolls around, the locals and the photographers face off regarding taking pics of the Foxes. We only experienced one small skirmish, where a local lady decided to perform a "silent protest", walking back-and-forth-and-back-and-forth between the Fox dens and the photographers. We heard that the previous year, one of the local residents was waving a gun around in a threatening manner towards the photographers. Hmmm.
But why the hostility? Nature is supposed to have a calming effect. People really need to be better people!!!
