Florence from the Giotto’s Campanile

Looking south-east from the Giotto’s Campanile, at the Santa Croce church. The top of the campanile , with its breathtaking panorama of Florence and the surrounding hills, can be reached by climbing 414 steps. Not too hard. The day was a little hazy, but sunny.

The Santa Croce church was begun in 1294, possibly designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, and was finished in 1442, with the exception of the 19th-century Gothic Revival facade and campanile. The campanile was built in 1842, replacing an earlier one damaged by lightning. The neo-Gothic marble façade dates from 1857-1863.
