Town Hall Pharmacy (Raeapteek) dates to 1422 and is still in use, with a small museum of medicinal remedies. It is one of the oldest continuously running pharmacies in Europe, having always been in business in the same house.

 

In olden days, an apothecary shop could be identified by the bottles filled with tinted liquids on display in the window. Originally, the colors were chosen based on the Hippocratic theory of bodily fluids. In the case of Raeapteek, these were symbols that stand for blood (warm) and phlegm (cold).
