27, Rue Saint-Sulpice

Hôtel (mansion) de Fougères retains a dazzling Mannerist style portal.

This hôtel was built around 1630 by the architect Charles Chamois (around 1610-1684) on behalf of Nicolas Moret. The hôtel remains in the courtyard but its facades are not very interesting. Its dazzling portal is especially noteworthy as it is a rare example of a Parisian Mannerist portal.

The doors of the portal are surmounted by a carved frame adorned with plants framing a now empty cartouche. Above, an oculus is framed by fruit racemes, rosettes and draperies. The cornice is supported by carved consoles of bearded and horned male heads. The center of the cornice presents a carved key in the shape of a male head.

The gate of the Hotel de Fougères is considered to be one of the most remarkable sculpted in Paris during the seventeenth century together with those of the hotel Châlon-Luxembourg and the hôtel of Alméras.
