Pretty construction site

Rustique (a version of the French Renaissance) is the style of the beginning of the Great Century, promoted by Henri IV and in force during the first part of the reign of Louis XIII. It dates from the middle of the 16th century. Its promoters are Pierre Lescot and Androuet du Cerceau.

The facades are drawn on an orthogonal grid of horizontal bands, placed at the level of the floors or window sills, and of vertical chains, marking the corners and/or bordering the window spans. This system, which is low in cost and easy to implement, has dominated French construction since the middle of the 16th century.

The upper parts of the buildings are the object of particular enrichment, in the form of stone dormers on straight roofs, often with imposing sculptures. The most noble façades are decorated with figurative bas-reliefs. The style is magnificent in the royal squares such as the Place des Vosges or the Place des Victoires, private mansions such as the Maison Jacques Cœur or ordinary houses such as those in Place Dauphine.
