Padaradise

The utterly remarkable view atop Padar Island is etched in my memory. Almost a year after visiting it, I still think about this place often. It's the combination of the sharp, grassy hills—which absolutely scream Komodo to a wildlife nut like me—and the idyllic, vivid blue tropical water and reefs, that make this place completely unique. And that's not even mentioning the biogeographic and physical wonders here, the Indonesian Throughflow and its effect of completely isolating so much nature, and the giant dragons that seem like they could conquer the world but that are sequestered here like they've been placed to guard some treasure. Padar and its neighbours seem familiar to someone from Australia's dry tropics, with the cockatoos and Themeda grasses and Zizyphus shrubs.

I can't wait to go back.
