Details of the Feminist Mural, A Feminist Mural, Paseo de las Palmeras, Mediterranean Balcony, Tarragona, Catalunya, Spain

On the occasion of International Women's Day 2021, two artists from the Association of Illustrators of Tarragona painted the feminist mural Women and empowerment. The event, organized by the Department of Feminisms and LGTBIQ+ of the City Council with the collaboration of the Municipal Council for Women, was attended by the two artists, Gabriela Basin and Marina Barberà.

The Women and Empowerment mural aims to make feminism visible in the streets of the city and thus resume feminist struggles that have occurred throughout history. The mural is inspired by the atrocious repression that was carried out in 1909 to women workers in a New York textile factory who marched through the streets denouncing their low wages, ending with 120 women killed as a result of police brutality. This fact led to the founding of the first women's union.

The Balcó del Mediterrani, or “balcony to the Mediterranean,” is one of Tarragona’s iconic symbols at the end of the Rambla. It offers a splendid viewpoint over the coast

A place beloved by Tarragona natives, legend has it that touching its singular railing ("tocar ferro") brings good luck. –

Located at the top of Rambla Nova, this airy “balcony” offers a splendid view of the Mediterranean, the Tarragona port, Platja del Miracle beach, and the ancient

Roman Amphitheatre. The iron railings along the Balcó del Mediterrani—the balcony to the Mediterranean—were designed by the architect Ramon Salas i Ricomà in 1889. They have become one of Tarragona’s iconic symbols.

Because of this view and the history, the Balcó del Mediterrani is among the most popular attractions for locals and visitors alike. A 300 metre-long promenade, built over the railway, covers the sheer drop beneath the Balcony and seafront.
