Unter der Stadt verläuft ein dichtes Netz an Wasserkanälen (60 km) und Schleusen, die die Stadt seit dem Mittelalter mit Trinkwasser versorgten und als Handelswege dienten. Im frühen 20. Jahrhundert wurden die meisten dieser Kanäle zugemauert und überbaut, um dem ständig wachsenden Straßennetz Platz zu machen. Es gibt nur noch wenige Stellen, an denen diese Kanäle offen liegen.
Bologna has a 60 km network of largely covered over canals. As early as the twelfth century the city provided itself with a hydraulic system consisting of locks, canals and underground pipes that distributed the water which was used mainly as an energy source for trades. At the beginning of the 20th century most of these canals had to give way to streets. There remained just a few places where you can see the canals.
