the purple lady
As the name suggests, the northern lights are expected in the north. All guides on the topic of northern lights also say that you should look for a place with a clear view to the north. We photographers always like to look for a nice foreground when photographing the Northern Lights, similar to what we do when photographing the Milky Way. So you look for a subject that you can photograph facing north and wait until the northern lights start dancing behind it. It sounds simple at first, but of course it isn't. Because on the one hand the sky has to be clear and on the other hand the green lady has to do the honors. And the lady likes to take her time... Yes, and then there are also very strong northern lights that penetrate far to the south and are then not visible in the north, but at the zenith or even in the south. Then you are a real idiot with your motif in the north. And places where you have beautiful landscapes as a foreground in all directions are few and far between... I simply panned the camera through 180° and photographed the show behind me without the foreground. The lights in the clouds are the reflection of 24-hour lit and heated greenhouses, common in Iceland.
