Colourful Surprise!

We've had Californian poppies for years, but only the orange variant, which is the original colour, I guess. This year, however, we suddenly have yellow poppies (the ones on the left), white ones, and even a dark orange-reddish one! A nice surprise!

In Dutch these flowers are called "slaapmutsje" ('nightcap') - I think because they close at night. They also close when it gets very windy, but not when it rains. They may also be called 'Nightcap' because in herbal medicine parts of this flower are used as a sedative (a sleeping aid).

They belong to the same family as the common poppy, but they are not very closely related. Their Latin name is Eschscholzia californica.
