City Giant
'City Giant' isn't the official English name of this insect - it is called the Hornet mimic hoverfly. But in Dutch it is called 'Stadsreus' and that translates as 'City Giant', hence my title. I spotted this insect on one of my Buddleia flowers and at first I did think it was a bee, wasp or hornet, but in fact it mimics these and the good news is that it can't sting! However, it is impressive with its length of 2.5 cm (1 inch)!
