Emerson Model 838, Circa 1955, Made in USA by Emerson Radio and Phonograph Corporation N.Y. U.S.A.

The model 838 was the successor to the 747, which used four subminiature tubes (1V6, 1AH4, 1AJ5, 1AG4), replacing the audio output tube with two transistors, maybe because in the early stages of the manufacture of transistors it was cheaper and easier to make transistors for audio stage than to radiofrequency.

The red one has black RCA transistors dated 5-26 (week 26 of 1955) and the gray one has blue Raytheon transistors dated 550 (week 50 of 1955). Very nice faceplate completely painted on the reverse and hard to remove. It requires special 4-volt battery to "A" and 45 volts for "B". I tested connecting external batteries and both still work very well.
