Peak 45124 passes Washwood Heath in January 1986

'Peak' 45124 passes Washwood Heath, Birmingham with a Cardiff-York additional train formed of BR Mk1 stock in January 1986. It looks very different now. The marshalling yard is closed and the cooling towers of Nechells power station, closed in 1982 were demolished for what is now the Star City entrertainment complex. On the far left new LDV vans are parked at the Drews Lane plant closed in 2009. A new road was built crossing the line roughly where the first carriage is and the gas holders at Saltley on the left have also gone. The scene will be further altered with the construction of the HS2 high speed line linking Birmingham Curzon Street and London beginning shortly.
