Hawaii- P.F.I. Rubbish Service

Kailua-Kona, HI

6/23/17

Aloha, here is P.F.I. Rubbish Service and their mini GMC Heil Rapid Rail. P.F.I. Rubbish Service is a pure residential solid waste company with 2 Rapid Rails, 2 Rear Loaders for bulk and around 3 Heil Retrievers (or similar). While I was in Hawaii, I wanted to find P.F.I. Rubbish Service on route. Throughout the week I had looked all over for carts on route and I would see a few here and there but thats it. Finally on Friday I found this Rapid Rail on the highway and I immediately followed it. After speaking with the driver, Eric, he informed me that residents can dispose of their household trash for free at at the Transfer Station. Most residents take advantage of the free service, I would say less than 10% of the residents have residential trash service, their were a couple times were Eric drove past 20 houses with no carts out. Towards the end of the video you will see the Hawaii County Transfer Station.

In regards to the P.F.I. Rapid Rail, it is a neat truck. It is originally from Prince Motors in Riverside California. I looked at the P.F.I. Rubbish Service yard (which has now moved) on maps and it is sitting in the yard with Prince Motors mud flaps. You might notice, P.F.I. put black spray on truck bed liner on the side of their Rapid Rail to prevent rusting, which I think is a great idea. Eric informed me that this mini Rapid Rail can pack over 500 of the 65/64 gallon Rehrigs and Toters. I'm not sure what year the Rapid Rail is but it's definitely a older truck and it sounds and operates great especially considering all the hills and the salt in the air.

P.F.I. has one of the most creative logos ever made and one of my favorite logos. Their logo consists of 3 mongooses carrying 2 trash cans and a trash bag. Mongoose are similar to a weasel or ferret, and it is interesting why mongoose are in Hawaii. Over a century ago farmers brought mongoose to Hawaii to exterminate the rats that were eating their crops. Mongoose were brought to Hawaii and the idea was a complete failure, rats are nocturnal and mongoose are diurnal so they never even see each other. So now Hawaii has a rat and mongoose problem on most of the Hawaiian Islands. Great logo choice by P.F.I. Rubbish Service.

Unfortunately I was unable to find a MSL or Rear Loader on route but I will look for them in the future. If anyone has plans of going to The Big Island Hawaii and wants route information, let me know. It is a challenge to find the residential routes and I will gladly share route information. If anyone knows who owned this Rapid Rail before Prince Motors, please let me know, Mahalo. And a big Mahalo to the driver, Eric.
