Alcorcon Castle
About Centenary of the Castles of Valderas, Alcorcón (Madrid)
It was in 1917 when a palace was inaugurated in Alcorcón, commissioned by the well-known Marques de Valderas, architect Luis Sainz de los Terreros.
Shortly after, two smaller ones were built next door. One of them would be used to house the chapel for private use under the name of San José, and another was used as a residence for the employees of the castle.
The buildings mix the style of the French castles with the English countryside mansions. They emphasize especially their turrets and decorative battlements, as well as the presence of Renaissance windows, others of Gothic style and eaves of Mudejar descent.
At present, the buildings of the complex are protected by the Law of Historical Heritage of the Community of Madrid, since they are manorial buildings and a chapel before 1936. In 2017, on the occasion of the centenary of its inauguration and at the request of the City Council of Alcorcón, they began the procedures to convert it into an asset of Patrimonial Interest.
The stamp issued by Correos within the Artistic Heritage series, aims to make known this architectural and palatial jewel, that whoever observes it, seems to be transported to the banks of the Loire or to the English countryside.
The stamp shows a beautiful image of the castle, with one of its impressive turrets in the foreground. The shield of the town and a band with its colors, recalls the recently celebrated centenary.
The "ñ" that represents the brand Spain, will accompany this seal on its journey around the world.
In 1988, the 6th Marquis of Valderas donated the castles to the City Council of Alcorcón and a reform project commissioned to the architects Enrique Fombella and Eduardo Paniagua began in 1991. In that process the chapel was eliminated because it was in a dilapidated state.
Currently, it houses the Museum of Art of Glass of Alcorcón (MAVA), which exhibits works made in glass within the panorama of Spanish Contemporary Art.
