Amen Corner

Some of you have very kindly asked what my trusty horse Hoof is up to.

Well as we speak he is flying out (on Pegasus Airlines) to The Masters at Augusta, which takes place from the 5th to 8th of April.

Hoof is a big golf fan and is a very tidy player with a handicap of 4 so do not play him for money.

However Hoof has a confession to make, cast your minds back to 2016 and the final day of the Masters in which Jordon Speith had a 3 shot lead when he stepped onto the 12th tee and the green jacket looked very much his.

But a plan was unfolding, Hoof and a few of his thoroughbred mates who had made the journey down from Kentucky were to be Jordon’s downfall.

All of these rascals were aware that England’s Danny Willett was climbing the leader board up ahead so they thought the afternoons play could do with being spiced up a bit.

Hoof and his mates assembled themselves in the trees out of sight behind the 12 green, and not a gallery badge amongst them. This is arguably one of the finest and at times trickiest par 3 holes in golf. It was at this point with Hoofs golf knowledge the plan began to unravel, Amen Corner as this area is known is notorious for its swirling winds making club selection difficult at the best of times even for these professional golfers.

As Jordon and his caddie were watching the tops of the tree lines for movement in order to assess the wind direction, Hoof and his mates let out one of the quietest and most harmonious synchronised botty coughs possible, and with that the trees were leaning away from the green as pretty as you like.

Assuming the wind was coming from behind so to speak Jordon selected a 9 iron, where in fact quite the opposite was happening. So with tee to green being 155 yds and what was in fact into the wind, the ball was never going to have enough legs to carry the water in front of the green.

The inevitable happened the ball came up well short and rolled down the banking into Rae’s Creek.

Jordon took a penalty drop from 70yds out which would be his 3rd shot and selected a wedge which was more than enough club, however at the top of his back swing Hoof and his chums shook the trees again with much gusto, Jordon saw this took his eye off the ball hit it fat and again into the water, at this point Hoof and his mates were in hysterics as this was the type of shot they could relate to and play.

Well eventually as the world looked on in disbelief Jordon holed out for a quadruple bogey 7.

So as Jordon dropped 4 shots on one hole and Danny birdying a couple of holes up ahead he went on to be crowned Masters Champion and to add insult to injury as Jordon was the previous years winner, tradition has it that the past champion presents the winner with the green jacket.

In all fairness to Hoof when he trotted back home into the village he phoned the then chairman of the Augusta National Billy Payne (like you do) to seek forgiveness and to explain his horse play, (Billy is the one with the rosy cheeks who pretends to act sober at the presentation ceremony in the Butler Cabin)

Strange how Billy was replaced in October 2017 !

Billy said let me stop you there Hoof, little did you lot know we have our own secret hidden cameras in those woods which the club use to monitor, shall we say more livelier night time activities of our more adventurous club members.

Billy went on to say the committee and I saw your plan unfold live, and as we are a bunch of old golfing duffers we were falling over with laughter, because for a pro to hit one shot in the water is funny but two and this club house started to rock.

The sales of gin and tonic went through the roof, and even the world record for the yard of ale was almost smashed at one point and we had our first lock in at the bar for many a year.

He concluded by saying, we could have stopped you at any time Hoof and therefore on this occasion mum’s the word and no-one will be any the wiser. In recognition of what you and your mates did we are going to give you honorary membership of the Augusta National Club.

So when all you good people are watching the Masters next weekend, look out for tree movement around Amen corner, and just remember what might be influencing it.

It just leaves me to wish you all a Happy Easter🐥
