Pileated Woodpecker
This morning I made a trip to Mapleton Park to get more photos with my Sigma 24-35mm Art lens and got some shots with the sun through the trees and sun rays. But as I came around a bend in the path, I could hear what I thought was a small dog barking, coming behind me. I turned, but didn't see a dog. Then I saw a flash of bright red moving in the trees on the ground. I moved closer to see this Woodpecker hunting for food in the snow by a tree trunk. I quickly changed lenses to my Canon 200mm F2.8 L II (didn't have my Sigma 600mm with me this morning). I had to get closer. So I moved slowly little by little and each time he would raise his head to watch me, then I would stand still for a bit until he went back to what he was doing. I eventually got close enough to take some shots. After a few photos of him in the snow, he jumped up on the tree trunk and stared at me. Another few seconds and he was gone. When he flew away, I only then realized how big he was. When spreading his wings, he looked like a hawk. Pileated Woodpeckers are about a foot and half tall. Never saw one before today. Glad I went to the park this morning :) And the "dog barking" I heard was probably his partner in the trees somewhere as this woodpecker's call sounds similar to that of a small dog barking. I had to google that one.....lol.
Taken with Canon 6D, Canon 200mm F2.8 L II lens.
