" The Mountains of Mourne "

" I believe than when writin` a wish you expressed,

As to how the fine ladies of London were dressed,

Well would you believe me when asked to a ball,

Faith they dont wear no tops to their dresses at all

Ive seen them myself and you would not in truth,

Know if they were bound for a ball or a bath,

Dont go startin them fashions now Mary mo chroí [ My Heart ]

In the place where the dark Mournes sweep down to the sea "

"Theres beautiful girls here but no never mind,

With beautiful shapes nature never designed,

Lovely complexions of roses and cream

But let me remark with regard to the same,

For if at these roses you venture to sip.

The colour would all come away on your lip,

So Ill wait for my wild rose whose waiting for me,

Where the mountains of Mourne,

Sweep down to the sea "

{ Percy French 1896 }

For me, personally this is the most perfect love song ever written. Its such a wonderful innocent and gentle thing and there isnt one amongst us, man or woman who would not want to have the kind of love expressed in this song. This place would affect us all that way. Im incurable anyway so If your looking for any sense, move on!!! lol!

Percy French wrote many songs in his lifetime. Mostly music hall stuff and very tongue in cheek and then suddenly he produced this masterpiece. It is thought that the idea came from a series of letters that someone gave him that were written by a young farmer to his girlfriend when he had to leave NI to find work in London after the harvest had failed.

He wrote the song while sitting on a seaside bench {now famous!} in Skerries, Co. Dublin and gazing across Dundrum Bay towards the Mournes in NI. [See attached album.]

Don Mc Cleans version is said to be the best version every recorded. Id agree as it really affected me the first time I heard it and it still can move me to tears. [Link in Album}

Thats about the best I can do really as sadly Im no Percy French! Lol! I do a good version of the song though. I was nearly somebody once!

Hope you like the photo!
