" Careless Whisperers "

This lovely ancient Beech wood sits on the edge of the glacial valley of Glencullen, just North of the Wicklow border in County Dublin..

There is something mystical about these place. When you enter in, the silence seems to come down, apart from the leaves which seem to whisper a secret message to you alone. The green just envelops everything and tints the atmosphere and the noise of the outside world just evaporates with the gray twisted trunks looking like contorted figures watching your every move. The undergrowth takes on a wonderful purpleish hue and seems to have a life of its own Perhaps its over imagination but no not for me. I have talked to others who experience similar feelings though each one is different.

In ancient mythology of course, these were the dwelling place of the Tuatha De Dannan, a small statured race of people with magical power who lived at one with nature. The Celts invaded Ireland and defeated them. These people went underground and lived in forts, now know as fairy forts or raths or in woods and river valleys and hidden places. You know when you are in them as a feeling comes over you that is hard to explain. The entrance to these places is normally under a Hawthorn tree which is sacred and woe betide anyone who interferes with it.

They are still there to this day and are the modern invention of the fairy made popular by the Victorians and the dreadful Leprachaun, a German spirit hijacked by Hollywood and given a new identity!. Indeed, its similar to the Green Man in English culture.

If they do exist surely it is in places such as these.

Eamonn Morrisey, a well know actor who lives not far from here tells a wonderful story which he swears is true

There is a fairy mound at the back of his house and he and his wife often sit up on it and take it easy. Suddenly one evening his wife took terribly ill and was rushed to hospital.

They found she had severe internal bleeding and they couldnt diagnose what was causing it. They were told that she might not make it.

Eamonn found a bunch of hawthorn blossom in the house and when he enquire`d from his wife she said she had picked it off a tree on the mound Eamonn said he went back up the mound and returned the hawthorn. He said he made peace with them, and within twenty four hours, his wife recovered fully. Its part of a documentary that he made for tv.

There are many such stories.Farmers getting killed by overturning ploughs or tractors while digging up these trees or going gray overnight or there young child been taken and replaces with a spirit child {a changelling]

There is a famous true report of such an imagined instance that lead to murder. See attached link.

Farmers publically laugh at these things but I have watched them plough around these trees so as not to disturb them.

My ex wife had a wonderful aunt called Mary. She died in England a few years ago, aged 95 having went to England during the war where she met and married a Canadian RAF pilot. A well grounded and tough lady not subject to flights of fancy { Well maybe with her pilot husband!!! Nice one!!! }

She lived on a farm here in a place called Style Bawn, which means the white stile. When she was fifteen, she was on her way home through the field one summers evening. She met a tiny woman, crossing the stile who was dressed completely in green from head to toe. Mary was taken aback put decided to pass her. As she passed the lady spoke to her in Gaelic, wishing her a good evening. Mary turned to watch her and she went through a gap in the hedge on the other side of the field. She swears its true and its possible.

Sometimes there are warning given of impending disasters or deaths by these spirit, the Banshee being the most famous.

The three knock on the door is a warning that follows my family. I have heard it when my own passed away.

When my Dad married my Mam they lived for a while in her mothers cottage in Shankill. She had a sister, who was known as great aunt Mary Anne. She was a stunning looking woman, a real lady, who traveled the World on the great ocean going liners of the 20s, as a ladies companion though Im of the opinion that there was more to it than that. Of course in those days these things were hidden. Thankfully we have moved forward and particularly here.

One night, at about 11, my Dad, Mam, Granny and Aunt and Uncle were sitting by the fire when a knock came to the door. The house was very isolated so it was unusual. My dad opened the door but there was no one there. He went and checked outside but there was no one around. It happened a second and a third time and the door wouldnt open. They all pulled at it to no avail. |My dad was a carpenter and doors that he fitted always opened. My grandmother said it was a warning of a death and it followed the family. After a few minutes the door opened normally. They got word the next morning that Mary Anne had died in America from gangarene poisoning caused from an ingrown toenail!!! I kid you not!!! Indeed this affliction is inherent in my family and I suffer from the same complaint!!!

Unbelievable really, but true! Id better get me feet seen to!!! lol!

In this often hard and unforgiving World, sometimes its no harm to sit back and think about these wonderful things its good for you and saves on psychiatrists bills. Its a well known fact that its good for mind and body. If tree hugging is your thing, why not!!!

All these old places are very special to me anyway, and there is more to them than you can see.

Have a great day!!!!

Pat.

Update to my friends :

Thank you all for your input and lovely comments on my photo and story. Its very much appreciated. The stories were related to me directly. The three knocks on the door is one 100 per cent true. It was told to me as a young child of 10 by my Father, a well grouded, well read no nonsense man who did not tell false stories, my aunt Bridie and my Mother who were there at the time.My Dad told me that he was very frightened of it.I have never read of a similar incident anywhere else and its so unusual that I do believe it.

Normally I am a very sceptical person but I have experienced 2 incidents that were not imagined in the least and I cant explain. There are places with special feelings to them and they are not all graveyards in the middle of the night. Ask anyone who has been to Daccu, the Nazi extermination camp in Poland where millions were executed and as them what they experiences and they will tell you of the feelongs of terror and pure evil that they encountered.I came accross the same thing in the Colleseum in Rome many years ago and started to shiver and a feeling of pure evil came over me. I had to run out of the place. There were 17 of us and 3 others had the same emotions as myself. In Ireland they call people who experience this stuff, somene who "is Close". My mother was this way. She would dream that a certain person was chasing her.She would tell me in the morning that she had dreamed about a certain person chasing her on the previous night. She was always a young child in her dreams and in her mothers cottage in Shankill. In the dream she always hid under the kitchen table to get away.

Within days, we would hear that the person involved had passed away. It was always someone she new well..She had the dream the night her mother died and was telling me about it when the postman came to the door with a telegram. She had already told me that something was wrong. Its very unusual.Perhaps I inherit a certain amount of stuff from her but I dont have dreams like that. Its more of feeling a presence with me and I can here whispers in my surroundings. I dont know what they are saying but it is nice and happy .And no, its not voices telling me to kill someon which is a common enough excuse!!!! It can to me happen anytime. Day or night and even in the middle of the rush hour in the city. It also happens in certain places on the mountains here or in woods as this one here.I have returned to these places many times and the feelings always re occur. I dont have an explanation and I cant even decipher it but it is very real and not in the least bit frightening.I am very lucky to have this as I get great feelings of happiness and comfort from them. I really dont know what a psychiatrist would make of me in this one regard and Im not going to ask either!!! Lol! I did have a stroke 5 years ago from which i recovered totally, thankfully. I went under very comprensive brain tests at that time including epileptic ones where the wire your brain to a machine and buzz you with all sorts of lights to see if you will react. It was amazing. Im told it is like a trip on lsd. Not that I would ever go there, but Id like to own one of those machines though!!! Anyone got 5 million? They found nothing.Brain dead obviously!!! So Im no more a nutter than anyone else thankfully!

Anyway, thats how it is and I know there are others on here who have similar experiences.

Pat.
