" Cleevaun Loch, the Jewel of the Mountains "

Mullaghcleevaun Mountain is the second highest mountain in Co. Wicklow and is 849m high. The name in Irish means "the summit of the cradle" and Cleevaun Loch is a wonderful small jewel of a lake on its eastern slope.

Pollaphuca reservoir with Black and Sorrel hills can be seen in the distance and on a clear day, the Hills of Wales are visible but Ive been caught in the rain up there on my last two visits and had to abandon the trip.

Tragedy occurred there in the 70s when a group of young men drowned while swimming in the lake and there is a monument on the cliff side to their memory. It can be a dangerous place.

The mountain is best accessed from the military [ R115 ] road across the shoulder of Carrigshouk, over Mullghcleevaun East Top [795m] and along the ridge to the main mountain itself. Its about 10km round trip but its difficult, or at least I found it so.

Its a great place to find pieces of white quartz which are very visible protruding from the dark brown peat. You can see it in the foreground where the lake overflows . I always take some home as its a pretty stone. Within 5 minutes of taking this pic, the cloud came down and the rain started. Visibility went down to 10m so I beat a hasty retreat back to the car which took about one hour.

Its a wild rugged beautiful place and very peaceful. Its highly unlikely that you will meet anyone up there as there not all quite as mad as me!!!!! There are some lovely big granite rocks along the way where you can sit and take in the spectacle and eat your sandwiches which will taste better than anything else you have ever eaten!! I can never figure out why! Lol!

Hope you will like my photo and fave if you do.
