FEC 960 @ Ft. Lauderdale, FL

With another day's work done, FEC local 960 rolls south through Ft. Lauderdale. The train is only minutes away from yarding their train in East Storage. FEC 511, a GP38-2 built for the FEC in April of 1978, has the distinction of being the only unit left on the roster painted in the full "Going Places" scheme. Sister GP38-2's 508 and 510 have had their noses repainted solid blue and only retain the logo and stripes on the long hood ends.

Back at the time of this photo, train 960 was the weekday local that ran north from Ft. Lauderdale to work the industries along the Pompano Market Spur. To negate a run-around at Pompano, 960 operated push pull. They ususally left FTL before well before sunrise and returned anytime between 10am and noon depending on work. Nowadays, local 945 out of West Palm Beach handles the Pompano traffic.
