John Lennon (Detail)

Digital image on canvas (2015)

Large: 115 x 90 cm

This portrait of John Lennon represents another dimension in Wang Lang's work whereby picture elements form an overall image, yet they also seem to take on a life of their own. While the pixels stand as an ideal metaphor of Lennon's aspirations for world peace, the doves themselves also seem to swirl and flock in dynamic formations quite distinctively from the aggregate sum of their parts.

In this sense, this particular work represents an ever deeper multi-dimensionality. Firstly, we have the semantic interplay between the doves and the portrait of Lennon they construct. Then we have individual flocks of doves flowing from within their ranks to form waves superimposed upon and interwoven into the tapestry of the mosaic's surface. Finally, we have the doves in front which appear to be flying right out of the canvas, imbuing the work with a strongly three-dimensional feel.
