Mao vs. Greenbacks

Digital image on canvas (2015)

Large: 120 x 90 cm

The context of this work is a portrait of Mao Zedong as it appears on the largest denomination of Chinese currency, the 100 yuan RMB note which is composed of a myriad of 100 dollar note picture elements.

This irreverent union of the Chinese communist party's first generation leader and founder of the so-called "New China" - who is given god-like status in the party-state pantheon - with that of 100-dollar notes leaves us with much room for imagination as to the connection between the two.
