Culloden Viaduct - 14th May 2017

The Culloden Viaduct, known also as the Nairn Viaduct or the Clava Viaduct is a railway viaduct on the Highland Main Line,

It was opened in 1898 as part of the Inverness and Aviemore Direct Railway, which was built by the Highland Railway.

The 29 span viaduct crosses the wide valley of the River Nairn. At 1800 ft (549 m) in length, it is the longest masonry viaduct in Scotland.

The engineer was Murdoch Paterson and the viaduct is constructed of bullfaced red dressed rubble with tooled ashlar arch rings and parapet. Each round-headed arch ring measures 50 feet, except that crossing Nairn River which measures 100 feet. The south end of viaduct is curved in order to align the approach with the hillside.
