Lochaber Smelter 20 Aug 2016

Water in the huge pipes descends 600 feet to the turbines which generate electical power for the aluminium smelter at Fort William. The bulk of the water comes from Lochs Treig and Laggan with additional input from adits between there and the top of the pipeline. The scheme construction started in 1924 and was completed in 1929. The main tunnel was, until 1970, the longest water-carrying tunnel in the world, an enormous 24 km (15 miles) long and 5 m in diameter.

It was fairly difficult to get this shot as the zig-zag road up the mountainside does not go to the buildings which can be seen from the glen below. It was necessary to scramble down from the track to the microwave dishes and then squeeze between the pipes to scramble up old scaffolding for a picture. The buildings have a security fence round them which is a shame as they may make a good shot too.
