Wallis's Picturesque Round Game - GrandpaTJ (reproduction)
This is a project Terry carried out for me last year, cutting a reproduction of Edward Wallis's 1835 "Picturesque Round Game of the Produce and Manufacturers of The Counties of England and Wales".
I have a copy of the original game print which I purchased stuck to a backing board. It was also published as a puzzle to assemble and then play on (See Linda Hannas plate 31, opposite page 17). I photographed the print for Terry and using that plate, he cut an identical puzzle to the original, but on much thicker ply to avoid it warping. Unfortunately the quality of my photo and/or Terry's subsequent print of it has not resulted in as clear a final puzzle image as the original print. In particular the 151 numbers assigned to each feature of the puzzle are not as clear as might be hoped for.
The print or puzzle would have been accompanied by a set of rules for the game which comprised teetotum-racing around the map, probably reading out, and hopefully learning, some facts about each location as you visited them.
