Although published in 1855, this map itself is much older, as Australia was till called “New Holland”, the name given to it by Abel Tasman in 1644. He had discovered Tasmania 2 years earlier. The name Australia was not adopted until the 1830s. The map also includes many of the sea routes of late 18th and early 19-century explorer’s, most notably Captain Cooke in the South Pacific
