Europe Delineated - John Betts, c.1850
John Betts was a prolific publisher of educational material: maps, globes, table games and jigsaw puzzles. He produced puzzles from around 1830 to 1875. He advertised his games as “invaluable as auxiliaries in the course of private education ... and already in extensive use in the upper classes both in this country and in the colonies”.
This puzzle was again intended to be educational - see the sub-title address “Little folks will please to observe …” and was available mounted on cloth in a case for 3s 6d or dissected as here for 7s). Once assembled the map in the middle of the puzzle acted a game board with a route to follow. The puzzle would have been accompanied by a booklet of rules. This was how Betts sold most of his game puzzles, but sadly almost invariably all such booklets have been lost.
