AHS/ Mexican Sugar Skull inspired look
I decided to go onto a new genre of make-up than my previous looks explored. I chose to experiment with more horror inspired face painted. My inspiration for this make-up look came from a TV show called American Horror Story in which the main character Tate in season 1 is often seen sporting skull make-up when taking on his disturbed alter ego, another inspiration for this look came from Mexican sugar skulls that are often used in their celebration of the Day of the Dead. These two looks contrasted a fair amount as Tate's skull make-up was more hazy and detailed whereas Mexican sugar skulls tend to be bolder with deliberate patterns. So i chose to incorporate both of this fundamental ideas and combine them into one look, focusing on making my skull look a little wonky and not perfectly balanced as I wanted to replicate Tate's true nature of being extremely flawed.
Process
I firstly began by using a pore refining primer on my skin as I was going to be using face paint for this look and they become cakey extremely easily.
Then using a sponge and warm water I began to apply a white face paint onto my face, focusing most of the product towards the centre of my face as this is where I get the most redness but I also ensured that I applied the face paint down my necks and ears as these areas would also be on show.
Then I got to work with my fine detailing brush and began to draw the unique eye sockets shapes, ensuring that I stopped after each stoke to make sure that the shapes on both eyes were even. When I'd finished drawing the shapes i used a square brush to fill them in with more black face paint to give a hollowed out effect to my face.
I then used the fine detail brush to trace around my nose with the black face paint and then filled in this shape with the square shaped brush to give the effect of having no nose.
I then started to draw horizontal lines on my face which would be the beginning on the teeth that I would draw on later. I then drew on the lines that would be my mouth.
I then finished of drawing in the lines for the teeth and began drawing in the teeth, ensure that while they were roughly even they weren't completely perfect.
I then used the fine detail brush to draw on the shapes that would become my jawbone then connected these half circle lines so they would connect at my ear.
I wanted to give my skull an angrier look so I drew almost devil horn like shapes at the tops of the eye sockets shapes to give the appearance that the skull was frowning.
Then using a black eye shadow and a small flat top eye shadow brush I began to shade all the lines on my face to closer represent the hazy look that the skull had on America Horror Story.
I also filmed and uploaded a time lapse of me applying this make-up on myself onto YouTube : www.youtube.com/watch?v=23Piwy4gemg
