Last Station before the North Pole

There used to be a coal mine here in Ny-Ålesund.

The mine wasn't very profitable and was closed in 1929. It was later reopened and then closed again in the late 1950's.

This little train used to haul coal from the mine to the dock where it was shipped away.

It was strange seeing a steam train here, less than eight hundred miles from the North Pole.

I would have liked to have done a bit more photography here but I was under pressure. I was already lagging behind the group, the girl with the gun was hanging back to guard me and the snow was setting in for the return trip to Longyearbyen.
