Stratton: Church of St Mary (Dorset)
Red Dragon flag of the 3rd Battalion, Welsh Regiment from the First World War; given by Brigadier-General E. O. Crozier (the former commander of 40th (Welsh) Division) to Alfred Pope, a solicitor (and part owner of the Eldridge, Pope, & Co. brewery in Dorchester). Crozier gave the flag in honor of Alfred Pope's son, Lieutenant-Colonel E. A. Pope, DSO, a former CO of the 3rd Battalion, Welsh Regiment.
Edward Alexander Pope (1875-1919) studied at Winchester College (1889-1892), and a short biography is available from the school's online roll of honour: www.winchestercollegeatwar.com/archive/edward-alexander-p...
Aside from Winchester, Pope also studied at the Elizabethan Grammar School, Dorchester and Weymouth College. He qualified as a solicitor and was also a director of Eldridge, Pope & Co. He served in the South African War with the 3rd Bn., Welch Regiment, but was invalided home in 1901.
In 1904, Pope married Sybil Aline, the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel C.J. Briggs, J.P., D.L., of Hilton Castle, Durham.
From 1915, Pope was CO of the 12th (Service) Bn., South Wales Borderers, being awarded the DSO and promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in 1917. He was wounded in April, but after his recovery, he resumed command of his old battalion, the 3rd Welch. The Winchester roll of honour explains the rest:
In November 1917, he had a severe bronchial attack – the result of exposure in France – from which he never fully recovered. He returned to duty in May 1918, but in the following March suffered a relapse and died in hospital in London on April 9th 1919. His funeral took place at Golders Green Crematorium and his ashes lie near the south wall of St Mary’s Church, Stratton, Dorset..
Several of Pope's relatives died in the war; two brothers and a brother-in-law:
Lieutenant Percy Paris Pope, 1st Bn., Welsh Regiment (also a Wykehamist) died at Loos on the 2nd October 1915: www.winchestercollegeatwar.com/archive/percy-paris-pope/
Captain Charles Alfred Whiting Pope, RAMC was drowned when the troopship Transylvania was torpedoed in the Mediterranean on 4 May 1917
