The Battle of Mysunde was fought during the outbreak of the Second Schleswig War. An unprepared Danish defense force of around 2,000 men manned guns and positions along the eastern stretch of the Danevirke at Mysunde. The Danevirke, Denmark’s incredibly dilapidated and outdated fortification system, was evacuated right after this battle.

10,000 Prussian infantry charged through a frosted over marshland, covered by a thick veil of fog. Danish defenders began with an artillery barrage that made the assault incredibly difficult and eventually cancelled by Prussian leadership. This was one of the only Danish victories in the 1864 war.
