The Arrest of Adela Pankhurst

A newspaper article titled "Women Socialists Attempt To Invade Parliament" printed in August 1917, reporting on the arrest of Adela Pankhurst due to her protest demonstration and defiance within parliament chambers.

This artefact was selected as it recounts the events of Adela Pankhurst's arrest. As Adela actively campaigned against the issues and repercussions of war on life at home, for example, rising food prices, worker's standards of living, the cost of war and anti-conscription, Adela began to be treated with increasing severity by the authorities, as her actions were often considered treasonous. This artefact is important to include within the exhibit as it showcases the consequences Adela had to face for campaigning against the government.
