The wall encircling Lucca was constructed during the Renaissance period from the early 16th to the 17th century and remains completely intact today.
The circle of walls(4 kilometers around the old city) is considered one of Europe's greatest examples of modern defense.
No longer needed for defensive purposes, in the 19th century the area became an urban park and is widely used today for leisure and sports activities.
