Charles-Nicolas Cochin (The Younger) (1715-1790 France) --- --- Marquise de Pompadour in a scene from the opera « Acis et Galatée » 1749
This jewel-like gouache commemorates an intimate performance of the opera Acis et Galatée for the French King Louis XV, in the now destroyed Theatre des petits cabinets at the Palace of Versailles. Cochin depicted the performance form an unusual viewpoint, giving equal attention to the actors on an elaborate set – including the king’s mistress, Madame de Pompadour - as to the lively audience I the playhouse. Indeed, this is the only work of art that records the appearance of the short-lived Rococo theatre.
