4à4 no.7 by François Morellet (b.1926)

"In fact, if my works of art have flirted with the void since the 1950s, it is with the particular void created by the absence of 'nature'. A desired absence, shrouded from my evocation of Nature, of any 'natural' justification, of any natural principles. One justification for these 'de-natured' art works, itself 'de-natured', rid of God and his residues: the idea of nature. It is to accept a world ruled by chance and the artificial, to accept a present that is no longer denied in the name of a lost past, or future yet to be established. It is an attempt to create 'artificialist' art, far removed from naturalist art as the latter is from sacred art".
